MP3 is a widely compatible lossy audio format for listening and sharing.
A lower bitrate usually means smaller output at the cost of audio detail. Decoding MP3 into WAV makes an editable PCM copy but does not restore lost quality.
Supported types and limits are specific to each tool. A familiar file extension does not guarantee that a malformed or protected file can be converted.
